What the B47 is known for
The B47's best-known fault is the EGR cooler. It can leak coolant into the intake, where the coolant mixes with soot, and in rare cases that has caused fires. BMW recalled it in 2018, a campaign that covered four-cylinder diesels built from April 2015 to September 2016, and again later because the first fix did not always hold. A redesigned cooler has been fitted since 2022. On our owner reports the leak shows up from around 60,000–80,000 km. Ask for proof the recall work was done, and be wary of a car that loses coolant with no leak you can see.
Timing chain complaints are far fewer than on the N47 it replaced. On our data they typically come well past 100,000 km, at €800–2,500. A B47 that has spent its life on short trips is more likely to have a clogged diesel particulate filter, so give a town car a longer test drive.
