"N47 timing chains usually die around 120k miles on pre-2013 cars. The later ones last a bit longer — but the chain is always the elephant in the room."

Known Issues
Timing Chain Failure (Rear-Mounted)€1,500-4,500 · 100,000-200,000 kmCRITICAL

The N47's timing chain is mounted at the rear of the engine, requiring near-full engine removal to replace. Chain tensioners and guides wear and fail, often resulting in chain snap and catastrophic engine destruction. Pre-2013 engines are especially prone, with failures reported around 120,000–160,000 km. BMW issued a recall and extended warranty in some markets. This is the defining and most serious flaw of the N47.

Metallic rattling or chattering on cold start, especially below 0°C
Rattle that disappears after engine warms up (early stage)
Loud knocking or complete engine failure (advanced stage)
Timing-related fault codes
DIY: Expert only — requires engine removal
High-Pressure Fuel Pump (HPFP) Failure€1,200-3,500 · 100,000-200,000 kmHIGH

The N47 uses a Bosch CP4.x high-pressure fuel pump which can disintegrate internally, sending metal debris throughout the entire fuel system — from the tank to the injectors. This often necessitates replacement of the pump, injectors, fuel rail, and lines, making it an extremely expensive repair.

Hard starting or no-start
Low fuel rail pressure fault codes
Loss of power or engine stuttering
Metallic debris visible in fuel filter

EGR Valve Failure and Cooler Leaks€400-1,200 · 100,000-180,000 kmHIGH

The EGR valve is known to clog and fail on the N47, causing reduced power, rough running, and limp mode. EGR cooler leaks were serious enough to trigger a DVSA recall affecting nearly 35,000 BMW and MINI vehicles. A blocked EGR left unaddressed progressively worsens and can result in complete engine fault and inability to exceed 30 mph.

Limp mode — car barely reaches 30 mph
Rough idle or hesitation on acceleration
Excessive smoke from exhaust

Oil Pressure Warning on Hot Engine€200-1,500 · 80,000-180,000 kmHIGH

Multiple owner reports and forum discussions document oil pressure warning lights activating when the engine is hot, particularly at low RPM or on bumpy roads. Causes include a failing oil pressure sensor, worn oil pump, or sludge buildup from extended service intervals. Ignored, this can lead to bearing damage and engine failure.

Oil pressure warning light at operating temperature
Light flickering on bumpy roads at idle
No error stored in DDE in some cases
Low oil pressure alert on instrument cluster

Excessive Crankcase Blow-By / PCV System Issues€150-600 · 80,000-160,000 kmMODERATE

Owners report significant blow-by on the N47, sometimes dismissed as normal diesel behavior. The PCV (crankcase ventilation) membrane hardens over time, causing oil leaks and increased crankcase pressure. BMW issued a recall related to the crankcase (PCV) system on earlier models. The valve cover CCV membrane should be inspected and replaced proactively.

Visible smoke or heavy vapour from crankcase breather
Oil leaks around valve cover area
Oily residue in intake system
Increased oil consumption

Jerking / Hesitation Under Load at Low RPM€100-800 · 60,000-150,000 kmLOW

Some N47 owners report jerking or surging when accelerating under load, particularly in lower gears under 2,200 rpm. Causes include a dirty EGR valve, low fuel rail pressure, or fuelling map issues. Often resolved by EGR cleaning or fuel system servicing.

Engine stumbles or jerks under load in 2nd gear uphill
Hesitation below 2,200 rpm
Smooth power delivery above that threshold

Buying Checklist
Record a cold-start video with the bonnet open and listen carefully for any metallic rattle or chatter from the engine — walk away if present
Confirm the timing chain has been replaced and request the invoice; if not done on a pre-2013 example above 120,000 km, factor €2,000–4,500 into your offer
Run the VIN through BMW's recall database and the DVSA recall checker to verify EGR cooler and PCV recalls have been completed
Scan the DDE (engine control unit) with ISTA or INPA for active and stored fault codes, especially low rail pressure (4B90), EGR, and oil pressure codes
Check the fuel filter housing and drain any sample — look for metallic sheen or debris indicating HPFP disintegration
Verify full service history showing oil changes no longer than every 10,000–12,000 km; reject any car with long or unknown service intervals
Service Reality
Community oil interval10,000 km
Oil specificationBMW Longlife-04 compliant 5W-30 fully synthetic (e.g. Castrol Edge 5W-30 LL or equivalent); community strongly recommends 10,000 km intervals rather than BMW's variable service schedule
Est. ownership cost (2yr)€1,500–5,000 per year depending on timing chain status, service history, and whether HPFP or EGR issues arise. Budget at least €2,000–4,500 upfront for timing chain work if not already completed.

Buying Advice

The N47 is a genuinely capable diesel engine undermined by one catastrophic engineering flaw: a rear-mounted timing chain that is both failure-prone and brutally expensive to replace. On any pre-2013 example, the chain replacement is essentially non-negotiable if it hasn't been done — budget for it upfront or walk away. Post-2013 N47TU units are more durable but still carry the same architecture, so cold-start inspections and service history scrutiny remain essential. If you find a well-documented example with a recent timing chain replacement, resolved recalls, and clean OBD data, it can be a rewarding diesel — but you must go in with eyes wide open to the risks.
