All three F30 N47 tunes (316d, 318d, 320d) share the same 2.0-litre block, the same rear-mounted timing chain, guides and tensioner, and the same EGR system, so the real reliability differentiator is production date and documented maintenance history, not which power output you choose. There is no engineering reason to think a 316d is meaningfully safer than a 320d, or vice versa; buy based on the power and economy trade-off you want, then apply the same cold-start rattle test, timing-chain history check, and EGR recall verification to whichever variant you're looking at.
