"The LS7 head problem is real — wide OEM tolerances and an exhaust valve that really isn't suitable for track use are areas of concern. 7000+ RPM is crazy anyway for realistic survivability."

Valve Guide Wear – LS7 Cylinder Heads€2,500-6,000 · 30,000-120,000 kmCRITICAL

The LS7 has wide OEM tolerances between valve stem OD and guide ID, causing the valve head to seat off-axis during closing. This leads to accelerated valve guide wear, misfires, and ultimately cylinder head damage. Particularly severe under track or high-RPM use. Documented extensively on CorvetteForum and Camaro5 forums. Vengeance Racing reports seeing it frequently on customer heads. GM issued a Stage II cylinder head revision to address the problem.

Misfires at high RPM
Ticking or tapping from cylinder heads
Oil consumption increase
Loss of power
Rough idle after extended high-RPM driving

Fuel Smell After Filling – Fuel System Leak Risk€300-1,200 · 20,000-100,000 kmHIGH

Multiple NHTSA complaints document a strong fuel smell after fuelling on 2006 Corvette models. Fuel can drip onto hot exhaust components, creating a fire risk. Chevrolet reportedly did not acknowledge the issue at the time. Primarily affects 2006 convertibles but warrants inspection on all C6 Z06 examples.

Strong petrol smell inside or outside the car after filling
Visible fuel residue near tank or exhaust
Fuel drips under the vehicle

Unexpected Engine Stall While Driving€200-900 · 20,000-80,000 kmHIGH

NHTSA complaints describe the engine stalling at highway speeds (55 mph) multiple times on 2006 models. Dealerships replaced suspected components but the issue recurred. No specific root cause was isolated in available data, but electrical system and fuel/propulsion system faults are flagged.

Engine cuts out without warning at speed
No fault codes stored at time of stall
Repeated stalling events despite dealer repairs

Sudden Braking and Steering Pull€400-1,500 · 10,000-60,000 kmHIGH

One NHTSA complaint describes the vehicle suddenly braking and pulling hard to the left at 70 mph shortly after purchase from a dealer. Categorised under steering and service brakes. Could indicate ABS/stability control fault, brake caliper binding, or brake system fault.

Sudden unintended braking
Steering pull to one side under braking
ABS or stability warning lights

Removable Roof Structural Issue – Recall€0-500 · 0-50,000 kmMODERATE

NHTSA recall 09V491000 covers 2005–2007 Corvettes with removable roofs (targa/convertible). Structural concern with roof and pillars. Affected owners were directed to dealers for remedy. Verify recall completion status on any used example.

Buying Checklist
Verify whether the cylinder heads have been updated to Stage II spec or replaced with aftermarket heads — ask for documentation and check casting numbers
Perform a full compression and leak-down test on all 8 cylinders; any cylinder below 90% is a red flag requiring immediate investigation
Run a borescope through the spark plug holes to visually inspect valve seats and cylinder walls for carbon buildup or damage
Check NHTSA VIN lookup for recall 09V491000 completion status on all 2005–2007 cars with removable roofs
Smell the engine bay and underneath the car after a full fuel fill to detect any EVAP or fuel line leakage near exhaust components
Review full service history for oil change frequency — any car used on track without sub-8,000 km oil changes should be treated with extreme caution

Buying Advice

The C6 Z06 LS7 is one of the great naturally aspirated performance engines, but the valve guide issue is well-documented and real — do not buy without independent head inspection. Prioritise cars with Stage II heads or documented head work by a reputable shop, as unaddressed examples can face catastrophic repair bills. Factor at least €3,000–6,000 into your budget as a contingency for head work if the history is unclear. This is a rewarding ownership experience for a prepared buyer, but a financial trap for someone expecting mainstream reliability.
