A sound six, as long as it isn't leaking oil or coolant
Worth buying if the service history checks out. No active leaks from the cooling system or the oil filter housing, and oil changes on time in the service history.
Two parts fail commonly here, the oil filter housing and the water pump, so look for oil or coolant at the front of the engine before anything else.
The housing is plastic and cracks with age, which BMW has covered in service bulletins. Oil pump wear and sludge appears as very common and critical, but the evidence behind it is weak, so treat that entry as uncertain and let a record of on-time oil changes settle it. The high-pressure fuel pump, injectors, VANOS solenoids and wastegate give trouble occasionally, as do the odd seal leaks. The head gasket, the ringlands and the rod bearings very rarely fail.
13 confirmed · sorted by severity
Oil pump wear or sludge accumulation (often from extended oil-change intervals) reducing oil pressure and lubrication.
Very common · Design weakness. Does not normally destroy the engine. Not safely drivable.
Connecting rod (big end) bearing wear or spun bearing, usually from oil starvation or extended oil-change intervals -- can destroy the engine if not caught early.
Very rare · Owner-caused. Can destroy the engine if ignored. Not safely drivable.
Piston ringland cracking under high cylinder pressure/heat, common on tuned forced-induction engines.
Very rare · Design weakness. Can destroy the engine if ignored. Not safely drivable.
Head gasket failure, often preceded by overheating; can lead to a warped head or cracked block if not addressed.
Very rare · Age-related wear. Does not normally destroy the engine. Not safely drivable.
1 owner report backs this, confidence 40/100.
HPFP wear or failure, sometimes shedding metal debris into the fuel system.
Occasional · Age-related wear. Does not normally destroy the engine. Not safely drivable.
15 owner reports back this, confidence 45/100.
The plastic oil filter housing, which also holds the oil-to-coolant heat exchanger, warps and cracks after years of heating up and cooling down. Oil or coolant leaks out, and the two can mix. BMW has issued service bulletins on it, and the fix is a new housing rather than a gasket.
Common · Design weakness. Does not normally destroy the engine. Still drivable.
1 owner report backs this, confidence 75/100.
Water pump seal or bearing failure (mechanical or electric pump), causing coolant loss.
Common · Age-related wear. Does not normally destroy the engine. Still drivable.
30 owner reports back this, confidence 50/100.
Injector wear, sticking, or seal failure causing misfires, rough running, or fuel leaks.
Occasional · Age-related wear. Can destroy the engine if ignored. Still drivable.
17 owner reports back this, confidence 55/100.
VANOS/VTEC/VVT-style variable valve timing solenoids or actuators fail or clog, causing rough idle, rattle on start, or reduced power.
Occasional · Age-related wear. Does not normally destroy the engine. Still drivable.
Valve cover gasket, rear main seal, or front main seal degradation causing external oil leaks.
Occasional · Age-related wear. Does not normally destroy the engine. Still drivable.
11 owner reports back this, confidence 45/100.
Wastegate, boost control actuator, or diverter/blow-off valve failure causing boost leaks or inconsistent boost pressure.
Occasional · Age-related wear. Does not normally destroy the engine. Still drivable.
Intercooler core cracking or pipe seal failure, causing boost loss.
Very rare · Age-related wear. Does not normally destroy the engine. Still drivable.
Direct-injection engines lack fuel washing the intake valves, leading to carbon buildup, misfires, and reduced power over time.
Very rare · Expected maintenance. Does not normally destroy the engine. Still drivable.

Behind this report sit 91 owner posts, forum threads and official records. Nothing gets on the list on one person's word. It takes a recall, or owners on separate platforms describing the same fault. The score then sets how often a problem turns up against the damage it does.
