•Cold-start the engine and listen for more than 5-10 seconds for chain tensioner rattle
•Request full service history and confirm oil changes at no more than 10,000 km intervals with correct VW 502/504 spec oil
•Run a compression and leak-down test across all six cylinders before purchase
•Ask the seller how much oil is topped up between services; more than 0.5L per 1,000 km is a red flag
•Check for Haldex fluid and filter service history and scan the Haldex control unit for fault codes
•Inspect the oil filter housing and underneath the engine for seepage
•Test drive on a wet or loose surface to confirm the all-wheel-drive system is engaging correctly
•If the car has DSG (Mk5 R32), confirm the DSG fluid and filter have been changed within the last 40,000-60,000 km

Do not choose between these based on horsepower alone, the underlying tensioner and oil consumption risks are the same across all three. The bigger practical decision is transmission: the Mk5 R32 and TT 3.2 offer an early DSG option which is a different maintenance item entirely, needing its own fluid and filter service every 40,000-60,000 km regardless of what the seller claims about the engine. If buying a DSG car, verify that service history specifically, separate from the engine oil history. If buying a manual Mk4 or Mk5, the decision comes down entirely to chain tensioner and compression test results, not the hp figure on the spec sheet.
