Verify full timing belt replacement history with receipts; reject any example with unknown belt service
Perform compression and leak-down test on all four cylinders to detect head gasket or bore wear issues
Inspect turbocharger for shaft play and axial movement; check for oil leaks around the housing
Document all modifications present and cross-check with claimed power output; walk away from heavily modified examples without professional tuner documentation
Test all gears including reverse during a thorough test drive and check differential and gearbox oil condition
Request or obtain a full OBD diagnostic scan to identify any hidden ECU or sensor fault codes
Confirm whether the car is a standard export model or the JDM Group A homologation version, and check that badges, turbo, and intercooler match the claimed spec

For a usable, day-to-day ownership experience, the standard 239 hp export version is the easier and cheaper car to live with, since parts and knowledge are more widely available. The 255 hp Group A homologation model is not inherently safer or more durable, it simply ran a higher factory boost level on the same base engine, so it deserves closer scrutiny of turbo condition, boost history, and any signs of over-boosting by previous owners. Whichever version you consider, engine build date and documented maintenance history matter far more than the badge or claimed power figure.
