Test drive above 6,200 rpm and confirm VVTL-i lift engages with a distinct power surge, absent surge means faulty lift system
Run the VIN through the NHTSA recall database to confirm the Takata airbag recall has been completed
Check for blue smoke on cold start and during hard acceleration to detect oil consumption from MMC cylinder wall wear
Request full service records showing oil changes at or below 7,500 km intervals and evidence of valve clearance adjustment
Listen for cold-start timing chain rattle from the front of the engine, indicating chain stretch requiring replacement
Test both front seat belt retractors for full, smooth retraction, a known failure point on these Celicas
Ask whether the engine has ever been run consistently near redline without documented oil changes, sustained high-RPM abuse accelerates both lift bolt and cylinder wall wear regardless of power variant

Do not choose between these two tunes based on hp alone. The higher-revving JDM/Lotus tune spends more time near the VVTL-i engagement point and redline in normal use, which can accelerate lift bolt and MMC cylinder wall wear if oil changes are not kept short. The lower-tune US-spec cars are marginally easier on the valvetrain over time but are not immune to the same failure modes. Whichever variant you look at, the real differentiator is documented oil change frequency and evidence of timing chain and valve clearance service, not the power figure on the spec sheet.
