•Perform a combustion gas test on the coolant (block test kit) to detect head gasket failure before purchase, critical on all Euro 4 examples
•Request an injector return flow test or scan for injector balance rate codes to identify worn or failing Denso injectors
•Cold start the engine and listen carefully for timing chain rattle from the front of the engine before it warms up
•Check the dipstick and oil filler cap for milky residue indicating coolant contamination, and check for fuel smell in the oil indicating DPF regeneration failure
•Inspect service history for oil change intervals, reject any example with intervals exceeding 10,000 km or gaps in records
•Scan the ECU for all stored and pending fault codes including DPF pressure, EGR, and injector related codes before committing to purchase
•Ask whether the truck is a pre-Euro 4 or Euro 4/DPF model, and confirm this against the compliance plate, not just the sale year

Do not choose based on horsepower alone. The higher output Euro 4/DPF tune fitted from around 2007 onward is the version most exposed to the head gasket weakness and DPF regeneration problems, since the extra power comes with more emissions hardware and higher thermal loads on the head gasket. If you mainly do short urban trips, a pre-Euro 4 truck (2002-2006) with less power but no DPF and a stronger head gasket track record is the safer buy. If you need a later DPF equipped truck, verify head gasket history and make sure it gets regular long runs to allow proper DPF regeneration.
