•Demand full service history with oil changes at or below 10,000 km intervals, reject cars with gaps or long intervals
•Cold start the car and road test through all gears including several downshifts into 2nd, listening for crunching or baulking
•Perform a clutch slip test by holding the car on an incline in a high gear under load
•Inspect the intake piping and intercooler for oil residue indicating turbo wear
•Scan the ECU for stored fault codes, especially misfire codes tied to ignition coils
•Ask directly about track day use and inspect brakes, tyres and front suspension bushes for related wear
•Check the VIN against Renault's recall database for the underbonnet insulation service action

TL4 gearbox 2nd gear synchro
Test cold 2nd gear downshifts extensively before purchase; budget for synchro or full gearbox rebuild on cars with no documented gearbox work
60,000-120,000 km
Clutch assembly
Perform a hill-hold slip test; factor in clutch replacement cost on any car with unverified launch or track history
50,000-100,000 km
Turbocharger
Check for shaft play and oil residue in intake piping; replace if worn rather than attempting a partial repair
80,000-150,000 km
Front suspension bushes and drop links
Inspect fully on a lift; replace worn items before final price negotiation
60,000-120,000 km

Underbonnet sound insulation / heat shield near turbo and exhaust
On early Mk3 RS250/RS265 cars, underbonnet insulation material located close to the turbo and exhaust manifold was reported to pose a fire risk if oil or fuel leaked onto it. Renault addressed this with a service action on affected VINs.

The hp difference across the 250, 265 and 275 versions of this engine comes almost entirely from ECU tuning and exhaust changes, not stronger internals, so the gearbox and clutch wear risks apply equally across all three. Choose based on service history, gearbox feel and clutch condition rather than the power figure. The Trophy-R is a stripped out limited edition that commands a premium and is more likely to have seen track use, so inspect it more carefully rather than assuming it is mechanically special.
