•Demand documented proof of IMS bearing upgrade, ask for a workshop invoice from a Porsche specialist confirming replacement with an aftermarket bearing
•Establish whether the car is a base Carrera (M96, single-row bearing) or Carrera S (M97, dual-row bearing), since this affects both risk profile and retrofit part choice
•Check oil filler cap and dipstick for creamy emulsification indicating coolant ingress or head gasket issues
•Inspect for blue smoke on cold start and during overrun to detect valve stem seal wear
•Verify water pump replacement history, if not replaced budget for immediate work or negotiate price accordingly
•On PDK-equipped cars, test all gears thoroughly for smooth engagement and check transmission fluid condition and service history
•Request a full oil analysis report or commission one before purchase to check for metallic particle contamination from the IMS bearing

IMS Bearing
Replace with an upgraded aftermarket bearing (LN Engineering or equivalent) immediately upon purchase if not already done, verify with receipts
Do immediately regardless of mileage
Water Pump
Replace proactively, ideally at the same time as IMS bearing work to save on shared labour costs
80,000-100,000 km or at IMS service
Valve Stem Seals
Monitor oil consumption, inspect plugs at every service, plan for replacement if consumption exceeds 0.5L per 1,000 km
100,000+ km

✓Iconic and proven naturally aspirated flat-six character
✓Strong community knowledge base and specialist support network
✓Excellent driving dynamics with well-documented maintenance paths
✓Carrera S (M97) uses a larger dual-row IMS bearing associated with a lower documented failure rate than the base Carrera's single-row unit
✓When IMS is upgraded and maintained properly, the engine can be very long-lived

If choosing between the base Carrera and Carrera S purely on IMS risk, the Carrera S (M97, 3.8L) carries a lower documented IMS failure rate thanks to its larger dual-row bearing, while the base Carrera (M96, 3.6L) uses the single-row bearing linked to most catastrophic failures. This is not a reason to rule out the base Carrera, both variants need the bearing checked or upgraded before purchase, but it does mean an undocumented base Carrera carries somewhat higher statistical risk than an equivalent Carrera S. Confirm bearing type and replacement status with a specialist regardless of which variant you are buying.
