Do not choose a 986 based on displacement or power alone, the IMS bearing risk is tied to production date, not engine size. Cars built from 1996 to 1999 (2.5L) got the more robust dual-row bearing, while every 2.7L and 3.2L S car from 2000 onward got the weaker single-row bearing with a higher documented failure rate. If buying an early 2.5L, the dual-row bearing lowers but does not eliminate risk, so proactive IMS retrofit is still worth budgeting for. If buying a 2.7L or 3.2L S from 2000 onward, treat IMS retrofit as mandatory rather than optional unless documented work already exists.
