•Pull ECU data logs or have a specialist check for evidence of aggressive tuning, launch control abuse, or boost spikes above factory limits
•Verify full oil change service history with receipts, reject any car with gaps or oil changes beyond 5,000 km intervals
•Cold-start the engine and listen for turbo whine, rod knock, or any irregular mechanical noise before the car warms up
•Inspect intercooler pipes and intake for oil residue which indicates turbocharger seal failure or excessive blow-by
•Road test under full load to verify boost pressure, smooth dual-clutch shifts, and absence of drivetrain shudder or clunk
•Check coolant condition, hose integrity, and pressure-test the cooling system to rule out internal or external leaks
•Confirm which power variant and model year you are buying, and check whether the turbo hardware and internals match factory spec or have been modified without documentation

Do not choose a GT-R purely on hp figure. All standard-tune VR38DETT engines (480, 530, or 570 hp) share the same core internals and reliability profile, the power differences come mostly from turbo hardware and ECU mapping across model years, not from a stronger bottom end. The Nismo-spec engine is a genuine exception, its internals are hand-selected and strengthened, so it tolerates its higher factory output without the added risk that aftermarket tuning to similar power would carry on a standard engine. For a non-Nismo car, treat any example already tuned above stock output as higher risk regardless of model year, and prioritise verified maintenance history over chasing the newest or most powerful factory tune.
