Check turbo shaft play by firmly gripping the compressor wheel and testing for radial movement, any play is a red flag
Perform a cold-start compression test across all four cylinders, readings should be within 10% of each other
Inspect all rubber fuel lines and turbo oil feed/return lines for cracking, weeping, or previous repair tape
Test all four injectors with a noid light and confirm fuel pressure holds after key-off for at least 30 seconds
Check steering column lock function and confirm ignition key turns smoothly without force or binding
Verify the service history shows oil changes no longer than every 5,000 km, neglected oil intervals are the number one killer of this engine
Confirm whether the car is a Zenki (1993-1996) or Kouki (1996-1998) facelift and check for a mismatched head or turbo from a swap

Don't pick between Zenki and Kouki S14 based on hp, the factory numbers are close either way. The Kouki's revised head and larger turbo make it the marginally better base for tuning, but on both variants turbo condition and oil feed line integrity matter far more to long-term reliability than which facelift you buy. Confirm the engine and turbo are original to that chassis generation, since engine swaps between S13, S14, and S15 donor cars are extremely common in this platform.
