•Perform a cold start test, listen carefully for any timing chain rattle or ticking before the engine reaches operating temperature
•Request full service history and verify oil changes were done at or below 10,000 km intervals using approved MB spec oil
•Check coolant temperature gauge behaviour during a mixed urban and highway test drive for thermostat irregularities
•Ask for evidence of timing chain replacement or inspection; if not done, factor €1,500-4,500 into your offer price
•Inspect the engine bay and underside for any oil seepage around the oil cooler and gasket areas
•Run a full OBD diagnostic scan to check for stored fault codes related to camshaft timing, VVT, or coolant temperature sensors
•Confirm which power variant is fitted (156hp, 184hp, or 211hp tune) as this affects resale expectations but not underlying chain risk

Do not choose between these tunes based on reliability, the timing chain, tensioner, and guide design is identical across the 156hp, 184hp, and 211hp versions, so power output has no bearing on chain risk. Base your decision on documented maintenance instead: look for proof of proactive chain kit replacement or, at minimum, a clean cold start with no rattle and short oil change intervals in the service book. A lower-power C180 with full chain documentation is a safer buy than an undocumented higher-output C250 or E250.
