Start the engine cold and listen carefully for timing chain rattle before it warms up
Check all service records for oil change history, reject any example with gaps over 7,000 km between changes
Inspect the turbocharger for shaft play by hand and look inside the intercooler for oil pooling
Scan for OBDII fault codes including VVT, boost, and timing-related codes before purchase
Check oil level and condition, dark or sludgy oil is a red flag indicating poor maintenance habits
Test drive under hard acceleration and check for blue or white exhaust smoke indicating turbo or ring wear
Ask specifically whether the car has ever been remapped or run higher boost, this accelerates both chain and turbo wear

5W-30 full synthetic meeting Mazda dexelia spec; many owners shorten the factory interval to 5,000 km on turbocharged examples given the engine's sensitivity to oil condition

Do not choose based on which power figure sounds strongest, the L3-VDT is fundamentally the same engine across the MPS, Mazdaspeed3, Mazdaspeed6 and CX-7, and all share the same timing chain and turbo sensitivities. The CX-7's lower factory tune runs marginally cooler and under less load, which some owners point to as a reason it seems to suffer slightly fewer chain complaints, but documented oil change history matters far more than which model or tune you are looking at. Treat any of these as high-performance turbo engines that need short oil intervals regardless of badge.
