•Perform a full compression and leak-down test to detect head gasket or valve wear before purchase
•Remove the valve cover to physically inspect camshaft lobes for pitting or scuffing
•Test VTEC engagement under hard acceleration above 5,500 RPM and confirm clean, sharp engagement
•Check for modification and tuning history, Hondata or aftermarket ECU tunes require extra scrutiny of engine knock history
•Inspect belt tensioner, serpentine belt, and water pump pulley for wear or cracking
•Review oil service records and check for consistent sub-5,000 km oil change intervals
•Confirm whether the car has been tracked, ask specifically about overheating or coolant top-ups

Camshaft and rocker arms
Inspect lobes for wear at valve cover removal; replace if pitting is found, mostly relevant on cars with unclear oil change history
80,000-160,000 km
Head gasket
Check for coolant loss and overheating history; do compression and leak-down test before purchase, especially on track-used cars
100,000-200,000 km
Belt tensioner and water pump pulley
Replace tensioner and inspect water pump pulley simultaneously; do not replace one without the other
80,000-140,000 km
VTEC solenoid and spool valve
Clean or replace if VTEC engagement is inconsistent; check oil pressure at the same time
60,000-150,000 km

Do not choose between these purely on hp figures. The JDM 215-220 hp tunes run higher compression and more aggressive cam profiles, so they are more sensitive to fuel quality and more likely to show the knock issue if run on poor fuel or after a sloppy aftermarket tune. The UK/Euro 200 hp EP3 tune is mechanically the same core engine with a slightly milder state of tune and is the safer choice if you cannot guarantee consistent high-quality fuel. The detuned K20A4 in the Stream and CR-V is the most durable but least exciting version, useful mainly as a cheap parts donor or reference for stock cam and compression specs.
