Check oil pressure at warm idle, should read solidly in the normal band and not sit at 1/4 gauge for extended periods
Borescope the intake manifold and valve faces for carbon buildup and oil film coating
Verify cooling system health, check coolant colour and condition, confirm the electric fan activates correctly
Inspect service history for oil change intervals, be cautious of any car with evidence of extended drains beyond 10,000 km
Test drive through all MT82 gearbox gears including quick 1-2 and 2-3 shifts, checking for synchro crunch
Check for signs of previous track use such as worn brake pads, scuffed alloys, or heat-cracked rotors
Ask specifically whether the car is a standard GT or Boss 302, the drivetrain and cam profile differ meaningfully even though both are Coyote 5.0

Oil pump and VCT phasers
Check oil pressure at warm idle, switch to 5W-30, and shorten drain intervals to 8,000 km max
80,000-140,000 km
Cooling system (thermostat, coolant, radiator)
Flush coolant, replace thermostat, and verify fan operation before any spirited driving or track use
80,000-120,000 km
Intake valves (carbon deposits)
Borescope inspection, walnut blast cleaning if significant buildup is found
100,000-160,000 km
MT82 manual transmission fluid and synchros
Change transmission fluid on a shorter interval than factory spec, inspect for notchy 2-3 shift before purchase
100,000-160,000 km

The standard GT tune (412 hp for 2011-2012, 420 hp for 2013-2014) is the safer daily-driver choice, both use the same cylinder heads and cam profiles and the small hp bump in 2013-2014 came from intake and exhaust changes, not a mechanical revision, so choosing between them should come down to trim and price rather than reliability. The Boss 302 is a genuinely different engine internally, with more aggressive cams and a higher redline, and while it is a robust unit, its higher-strung tune is less forgiving of neglected oil changes and sees more valvetrain wear if maintenance is skipped. If cross-shopping a Boss 302 against a standard GT, budget for more attentive oil and valvetrain upkeep on the Boss.
