The standard S65B40 is what almost every used E9x M3 buyer will encounter, and it shares the same rod bearing failure mode and inspection requirements regardless of which chassis it sits in. The S65B44 in the GTS is a genuinely different, larger displacement engine, not just a power bump, but it is so rare that most buyers will never see one for sale, and it should be verified carefully against build documentation if encountered since GTS badges are sometimes applied to standard cars. For either variant, the buying decision comes down to the same thing: documented rod bearing work, not the power figure.
