Do not assume every E36 M3 you look at shares the same engine internals just because it is badged S50. Euro-market cars got the true S50B30 and later S50B32 (double VANOS, individual throttle bodies, forged parts), while US-market cars got the detuned S50B30US and then the entirely different iron-block S52B30 from 1996. If buying a Euro car, the S50B32 (1995 on) is the more desirable engine for power and response but has two VANOS units instead of one, so budget for both sides failing over time, not just one. If buying a US car, confirm which engine is actually fitted by checking the block stamp, since S52-equipped cars have different parts availability and a different reliability profile than true S50 cars. In all cases, cooling system condition and VANOS documentation matter more than the specific variant.
