Do not choose based on horsepower figure alone. The core bottom-end risks (rod bearings, HPFP, timing chain) are shared across all power tunes since they use the same block and fuel system architecture. The 245-258 hp single-turbo 530d is mechanically the simplest and cheapest to maintain since it has only one turbocharger to fail. The 313 hp 535d and especially the 381 hp M550d add extra turbo stages that increase both performance and the number of components that can fail, so budget accordingly if considering those variants. Regardless of variant, prioritize confirmed HPFP recall completion and vibration damper condition over the advertised power figure.
