Scan full fault memory for fuel pressure, VANOS, and boost-related codes before purchase
Verify HPFP recall/software update completion against the VIN and check for a documented pump replacement
Cold-start the car and listen for wastegate rattle on deceleration, and again warm, between 2,000-4,000 RPM
Review service history for oil change intervals; reject any car serviced strictly on BMW's extended 24,000 km schedule without shorter community-recommended intervals
Check for stored or cleared VANOS fault codes and ask when the solenoid screens were last cleaned
Inspect coolant level trend and expansion tank condition for brittleness or cracking
On manual cars, test all gears including reverse, cold and warm
Ask if the car has been tuned (piggyback or standalone); tuned N54s place additional stress on the HPFP and turbos and change the risk profile considerably
Verify both Takata airbag recall campaigns and the blower motor wiring recall have been completed

High-Pressure Fuel Pump (HPFP)
Verify recall/software update history; inspect for fault codes and hesitation symptoms; replace proactively on high-mileage examples or if any starting issues are present
100,000 km
Wastegate Actuators (both turbos)
Inspect vacuum lines and actuator rod play; check for the retrofit bushing/flapper kit; adjust or replace before rattle worsens and requires full turbo replacement
80,000 km
VANOS Solenoid Filter Screens
Remove and clean both intake and exhaust VANOS solenoid screens as a preventive service item
80,000 km
Timing Chain and Tensioner
Budget for replacement on any example over 150,000 km, especially with unknown or poor service history
150,000 km
Coolant Expansion Tank and Hoses
Replace proactively as plastic becomes brittle with age; a cooling system failure on the N54 is costly

High-Pressure Fuel Pump (HPFP)
HPFP can fail suddenly, causing no-start or loss of power at speed. Recall covered roughly 130,000 vehicles from model years 2007-2010, with approximately 40,000 pumps actually replaced under the campaign (October 2010).
Electrical System, Blower Motor Wiring
Wiring harness for the heating/AC blower system may overheat, potentially causing electrical faults or fire risk. Matches NHTSA campaign 17V-676, affecting approximately 672,775 vehicles across 2006-2011 3 Series and related BMW models.
Air Bags, Frontal Driver Side Inflator Module (Takata, Wave 1)
Takata airbag inflator can rupture and send metal fragments toward occupants, posing serious injury or fatality risk
Air Bags, Frontal Driver Side Inflator Module (Takata, Wave 2)
Second, later Takata-related recall wave covering the same 2006-2011 3-Series population including the 335i, expanding on the original inflator campaign as Takata recalls escalated industry-wide
BMW N54
E90/E92 · LCI
Strong, tunable bottom end that handles significant power increases on stock internals
Genuinely quick in factory form, with real-world output likely above the conservative factory rating
Large aftermarket support and parts availability due to the engine's popularity in the tuning community
Twin-turbo layout gives usable torque across a wide rev range compared to naturally aspirated BMW sixes of the era
Known failure points (HPFP, wastegates, VANOS screens) are well documented, so problems are diagnosable rather than mysterious

If choosing between N54 tunes, the 335is/1M turbo hardware (320-335hp) is the more developed version of the engine, since it uses larger twin-scroll turbochargers introduced after BMW identified the wastegate actuator rattle problem on the earlier 302-306hp tune. This does not mean the 335is is immune to the other N54 issues (HPFP, VANOS screens, timing chain wear are shared across all tunes), but the turbo-related risk is somewhat reduced on the later hardware. For a standard 302hp E90/E92 335i, prioritize a documented HPFP recall completion and a clean cold-start listen for wastegate rattle over the exact horsepower figure on paper.
