Cold-start the engine from fully cold and listen for at least 1-2 minutes for timing chain rattle
Run a full OBD scan and check specifically for VANOS, cam timing, Valvetronic and lambda fault codes
Check for coolant pump fault codes and inspect the water pump housing and hoses for any coolant residue
Boost-test under load or check for turbo rattle at idle and any underboost fault codes
Check service history for oil change intervals, reject any car without records showing changes at or below 10,000 km
Ask if any aftermarket cooling fan has been fitted and cross-check the part number against the Valeo recall list
Inspect the pre-cat oxygen sensor condition and check for any emissions-related fault codes in live OBD data

Engine Cooling Fan (Aftermarket Valeo Replacement)
Certain aftermarket Valeo cooling fans supplied as replacement parts (part numbers 696121, 696273, 696275) across several BMW and MINI models may fail, leading to engine overheating.
Seat Belt Front Pre-tensioner
On some 1 Series models, the front seat belt pre-tensioner and load limiter may not deploy correctly in a severe crash.
BMW N13
F20 · Pre-LCI
Lightweight all-aluminium block keeps front-end weight down compared to older BMW four-cylinders
Valvetronic variable valve lift gives smooth low-end throttle response without a conventional throttle plate
Front-mounted timing chain is far more serviceable than the rear-mounted chains on BMW's diesel engines of the same era
Wide fitment across F20 and F30 models means parts availability is good and prices are competitive

Both the 116i and 118i tunes share the same block, chain and water pump, so the buying priority is service history and cold-start behaviour rather than power output. The 118i runs higher boost more often in daily use, so turbo and Valvetronic wear can show up slightly earlier on hard-driven examples. Neither tune is inherently safer from a design standpoint, focus on documented oil changes and a clean cold start instead of chasing the lower-power version for reliability reasons.
