•Check service history for any documented coolant top-ups or low coolant warnings between services
•Visually inspect the plastic coolant vent tube for cracking or seepage where accessible
•Listen for a buzzing or whirring noise from the engine bay for a minute or two after shutdown, indicating a failing electric water pump
•Ask whether the last oil filter was inspected for disintegration at the most recent oil change
•Scan the full fault memory with ISTA or ENET for stored Valvetronic or coolant related codes
•Confirm recall completion status via VIN for the seat belt pretensioner, knee airbag, and reversing camera recalls
•Verify oil change intervals are at or under 10,000 km using the correct LL-04 or LL-17FE+ spec oil
•Test drive and monitor coolant temperature gauge behavior at idle and under load for any abnormal fluctuation

Plastic Coolant Vent Tube
Inspect at every service; replace proactively if brittle or cracked, low cost, high consequence if ignored
30,000-60,000 km
Electric Water Pump
Monitor for buzzing noises post-drive; replace before failure to avoid overheating damage
80,000-120,000 km
Turbocharger Coolant Lines
Inspect for seepage or slow leaks, especially on higher-mileage examples; replacement resolved ongoing coolant loss in documented cases
60,000-120,000 km
Oil Filter
Inspect condition at every oil change; use quality OEM or equivalent filters
10,000 km (every service)

Seat Belts, Rear Pretensioners
Outboard rear seat belt pretensioners may not lock during a crash, increasing occupant injury risk
Air Bags, Knee Bolster
Knee bolster airbag may not deploy correctly in a collision
Back Over Prevention, Reversing Camera
Reversing camera may fail to display image, reducing back-over detection capability

✓Smooth, strong-pulling inline-6 with linear power delivery and minimal turbo lag
✓Front-mounted timing chain, no rear-chain removal risk like the N47/N57 diesels
✓Very robust bottom end, tuners regularly push past 500 hp on stock internals with no reliability penalty
✓Extremely wide fitment across BMW's range and the Toyota GR Supra means excellent parts availability and diagnostic support
✓No catastrophic, engine-destroying failure mode comparable to older BMW turbo engines like the N54 or N20

386 hp · 540 Nm
2023-2025
Both tunes share the same core architecture and the same known issues (coolant vent tube, water pump, Valvetronic, oil filter). The 386hp version is only available on 2023+ facelifted cars but is not documented as inherently more reliable than the earlier 340hp tune, it is simply newer. Buying decision should be based on service history and coolant system condition, not on which power figure is on the spec sheet.
