Run the VIN through BMW's recall database and confirm EGR cooler recall has been completed; do not buy if outstanding, and be wary even if marked completed given reports of repeat leaks
Cold-start the engine and listen carefully for timing chain rattle or metallic chatter that fades once warm
Connect an OBD diagnostic tool and run BMW's timing chain tension test; check for any EGR or swirl flap fault codes
Inspect the EGR cooler area and intake manifold for coolant residue, soot staining, or melted plastic
Check valve cover and oil filter housing for oil seepage and evidence of burning oil smell in the engine bay
Inspect the crankshaft main pulley for cracks in its rubber vibration ring
Request full service history and verify oil was changed at no more than 10,000 km intervals with correct BMW LL-04 spec oil

EGR Cooler
Verify recall has been completed; inspect replacement unit for leaks regardless, as re-leaks after repair have been reported
Check at purchase, re-inspect every 30,000 km
Timing Chain Tensioner and Guides
Run diagnostic tension test and inspect for cold-start rattle; assume costly engine-out replacement if preventative maintenance is required
100,000 km
Crankshaft Pulley (Vibration Damper)
Inspect rubber isolation ring for cracks; replace before it shears and throws the drive belt
100,000-150,000 km
Valve Cover Gasket
Inspect and replace if any seepage is found
100,000-120,000 km
Oil Filter Housing Gasket
Replace at first sign of leakage; inexpensive part but can cause oil-on-exhaust fire risk if ignored
100,000-130,000 km

EGR Cooler
Internal coolant leak within the EGR cooler can cause coolant to mix with soot and ignite at high temperatures, melting the intake manifold and creating a fire risk.

F30 · F30 LCI
Significant improvement over the early N47 predecessor's chain durability and overall NVH (noise, vibration, harshness) levels
Strong torque output (400 Nm) for a 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel in this specific 190hp tune
Excellent real-world motorway economy; low-to-mid 40s to low 50s mpg (UK) is realistic
Good parts availability across the wide BMW F-series and G-series B47 ecosystem
EGR recall work, if properly completed and verified not to have re-leaked, addresses the primary safety risk

The 2.0-litre B47 block powers the 316d, 318d, 320d, and 325d in the F30 LCI generation. Because they all share the same block, rear-mounted timing chain, and the heavily recalled EGR cooler system, reliability is dictated almost entirely by maintenance history and recall completion rather than power output. The 320d represents the best overall balance of performance and economy for most buyers. The twin-turbo 325d offers stronger performance but introduces a more complex, harder-to-service turbo setup. Regardless of which variant you choose, verifying EGR recall completion and documented short oil change intervals matters far more than the horsepower figure on the badge.
