Do not choose an EA897 purely on advertised horsepower. The real dividing line is whether the engine is a pre-2014 Gen1 unit or a post-2014 Evo unit, since the Evo revision addressed the chain tensioner and EGR cooler weaknesses that generate most of the expensive repair claims. A 245 hp car built in 2015 is a safer bet than a 204 hp or early 245 hp car built in 2012 or 2013. The 320 hp BiTDI competition variant is mechanically the same core engine with an added second turbo, so it inherits all the base engine risks plus extra turbo system complexity, budget accordingly if considering one. Always ask for the engine build date and check documentation for chain and EGR cooler work regardless of which output you are looking at.
