"Reliable" and "cheap to maintain" get used almost interchangeably in car-buying advice, and they shouldn't be. A Porsche flat-six can score in the high 80s for reliability and still cost €9,000+ over three years in tires, brakes, and servicing that has nothing to do with anything actually breaking. What we're after here is the overlap: a high reliability score and a low 3-year ownership cost, at the same time.

The pick: Honda K24A3, Accord
Reliability score: 78 (GOOD). Estimated 3-year ownership cost: €900–1,800.
Naturally aspirated four-cylinder, timing chain instead of a belt, no direct-injection carbon buildup to worry about, and parts availability that borders on absurd for how long this engine's been in production. Nothing about it is exciting, and that's exactly the point the failure modes that show up on turbocharged, direct-injected daily drivers mostly don't apply here.
Smaller and even cheaper: Toyota 1KR-FE, Aygo / Yaris / C1
Reliability score: 68 (SOLID). Estimated 3-year ownership cost: €900–1,800.
If you want the cheapest possible way into a reliable daily driver, this is about as simple as a modern engine gets a small naturally aspirated three-cylinder with a long track record in Toyota's smallest cars. The one thing worth checking at purchase: valve stem seal condition on higher-mileage examples, it's the one line item that shows up in the data with any regularity.
The honest European alternative: VW EA111 (naturally aspirated, not TSI), Golf Mk6
Reliability score: 78 (GOOD). Estimated 3-year ownership cost: €800–1,500.
This is specifically the naturally aspirated 1.4/1.6 EA111, not the turbocharged TSI variants, which carry a very different reputation. It's a useful reminder on its own: "avoid VW" as a blanket rule is bad advice the engine code is doing all the work here, the same way it did in the years-to-avoid list we published separately.
