Car Years to Avoid: The Worst Model Years by Make and Model

Generic “avoid the 2012 model” lists don't tell you why. Here are five specific engine codes with verified reliability scores in avoid-or-close-to-it territory, and the exact years that matter.

Every "years to avoid" list on the internet says roughly the same thing: pick a make, pick a model, pick a range of years, move on. What most of them skip is the part that actually matters to someone about to hand over money — which specific engine was under the hood during those years, and what actually breaks on it.

We pulled five engines from our own database that score in AVOID or low-RISKY territory, with the exact production years attached. These aren't guesses pieced together from forum vibes — they're reliability scores built from documented failure patterns, repair costs, and typical failure mileage.

BMW N63 (2010–2018) — X5 50i, 550i, 740i

Reliability score: 28–32, verdict: AVOID.

The N63 is a twin-turbo V8 with the turbos mounted in the "hot vee" between the cylinder banks, a layout BMW chose for packaging and throttle response. It also means the turbos run hotter than almost any other production V8 layout, and that heat soak accelerates valve stem seal wear and piston ring wear. The result shows up as oil consumption severe enough that BMW extended the warranty on oil top-ups for early model years, which itself tells you how common the problem was. If you're looking at an X5 50i, 550i, or 740i from this window, an oil consumption test isn't optional — it's the single most important thing to check.

Hyundai Theta II 2.4 GDI (2011–2014) — Sonata

Reliability score: 28, verdict: AVOID.

Manufacturing debris left in the engine during production would lodge in the connecting rod bearings, cutting off oil supply to that bearing over time. The failure mode ranges from a rod knock at idle to, in a meaningful number of documented cases, the rod letting go entirely while the car was being driven. This wasn't a niche complaint — it triggered one of the largest engine-specific recalls in the US in the last decade, and Hyundai extended the powertrain warranty on affected engines as a result. If you're looking at a Sonata from this generation, confirm the recall was completed, not just scheduled, and ask for the paperwork.

VW 1.4 TSI Twincharger, engine code CAVD (2009–2012) — Golf Mk6

Reliability score: 30, verdict: AVOID.

The twincharged 1.4 (supercharger for low-end response, turbo for the rest of the range) was clever engineering that didn't age well. The timing chain tensioner on this specific engine code wears faster than VW's own service intervals accounted for, and when it goes, the chain can skip teeth or fail outright — which on an interference engine means bent valves at minimum. This is specifically about the CAVD code, not every 1.4 TSI VW ever built. Later revisions addressed the tensioner design, which is exactly why matching the engine code matters more than matching the model year badge.

Land Rover Ingenium 204DTD (2015–2020) — Discovery Sport

Reliability score: 32, verdict: AVOID.

The Ingenium diesel family was Land Rover's push toward an in-house engine after decades of Ford- and PSA-sourced units, and the early years show it. Turbo actuator failures and timing chain wear show up well before the mileage you'd expect from a modern diesel, and the repair costs land squarely in "is this car actually worth it" territory once you're outside warranty.

BMW N47 (2009–2015) — 3 Series, 1 Series, 520d

Reliability score: 38–42 depending on year and displacement, verdict: RISKY — one step above the four engines listed above.

We've written about this one in detail before: the N47's timing chain is mounted at the rear of the engine, against the bulkhead, instead of the front. When it fails — usually somewhere between 100,000 and 180,000 km — the repair means pulling the engine, not a straightforward front-of-engine job. It's common enough and well-documented enough that we're including it here even though it doesn't quite hit AVOID territory, because "RISKY but everyone's heard of it" is exactly the kind of car that gets bought on reputation alone by people who haven't heard of it yet.

The pattern underneath all five

None of these are "bad brands." BMW makes the N63 and also engines that score in the high 70s and 80s. The difference is never the badge — it's the specific engine code and the specific years that code was in production before a running change fixed, or didn't fix, the underlying issue. If you're shopping for any of the models above, or anything else, look up the engine code before you look up the model year, then check whether recall or warranty extension work was actually completed on that VIN. That's the check that actually protects you, not the calendar year on the title.
